Who won the 2020 Sigma Awards?
The results are in for the 2020 Sigma Awards - the new data journalism competition that launched this past January. Here are the winners and organisations:
- Best data driven reporting (large newsroom) - The Troika Laundromat by OCCRP, The Guardian, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Newstapa, El Periodico, Global Witness and 17 other partners. (UK, Germany, South Korea, Spain).
- Best data driven reporting (small newsroom) - Made in France by DISCLOSE (France).
- Best news application - HOT DISINFO FROM RUSSIA by TEXTY.org.ua (Ukraine)
- Best visualisation (large newsroom) - See How the World's Most Polluted Air Compares With Your City's by The New York Times (United States)
- Best visualisation (small newsroom) - Danish Scam by Pointer (The Netherlands)
- Innovation (large newsroom) - Data Kit: An adaptable data project organisation toolkit by AP (United States)
- Innovation (small newsroom) - Funes: an algorithm to fight corruption by OjoPúblico (Peru)
- Open data - TodosLosContratos.mx by PODER (Mexico)
- Young journalist of the year - Rachael Dottle from https://fivethirtyeight.com/
The Sigma Awards aim to not just celebrate the best data journalism around the world, but also to empower, elevate and enlighten the global community of data journalists.
That’s why the competition’s winners will now be invited to the International Journalism Festival taking place in Perugia, Italy on 1-5 April 2020. They will have a chance to present their work and take part in lively discussions.
