Abstract:
Surveillance technologies, the role of global industry, and data-intensive systems are some of the most pressing privacy issues affecting researchers and advocates today. This course acts as a guide for researchers, and will provide advice on how to approach some of these issues around the world. Whether you’re new to research, or an experienced researcher, the advice and techniques taught in this course will benefit you as you research themes in privacy.
About this course:
Researching privacy raises challenges, that this course will help you address. This course will take you through the process for qualitative research on privacy topics. It explores designing research, as well as techniques including advanced desk-based research and interviews. We will explore the review and right-to-reply process, which not only improves the accuracy and quality of your research but will also improve its legal compliance.
What do I learn:
You’ll learn about designing research, advanced techniques for desk research, and key qualitative research skills, including interviewing. You’ll learn about the importance of a right-to-reply process that will improve the accuracy and legal compliance of your research.
What do I need to know:
This course is for people with a background in research, law, or social science, working or with an interest in developing their knowledge of the human rights field on topics surrounding privacy. It is strongly recommended to have taken the courses Right to Privacy: Introduction and Principles and Right to Privacy: Data and Surveillance.

Dr. Tom Fisher

Tom Fisher is a Research Officer at Privacy International. As well as designing and implementing PI’s research projects, he also works closely with PI’s partner organisations to develop their research skills.
