Archiving for investigative journalists

30 mins

Radio Zamaneh
Abstract:
This course will give you an understanding of how to archive your data after the story is published. You will learn how to preserve your most important data. This could help you follow up on a story later or prove facts if questions arise later on. This course will also show you how to archive your research as you begin and continue your investigation.
About this course:
The course is meant to be a beginner's guide to archiving your journalistic work. It is designed to give you a basic understanding of what an archive is and some tips for going about how to create one that suits your needs, especially in places where doing investigative work can be challenging and problematic.
What do I learn:
You will learn what an archive is, why it is important to set one up and a few tools and encryption methods for creating a safe archive that will suit your needs as a journalist.
What do I need to know:
Given this course is about creating an archive in politically challenging environments, the most important thing to know are things that can't be explained or answered by the instructor, particularly the challenges of working in your country. For instance, only you can know what the government, or any other organisation, would consider problematic to investigate or to keep. The more you can come into this course with an understanding of what could create difficulties for you in your environment, the better. Having this knowledge will help you know what data can be held on to, what has to be destroyed or what is best stored in a remote location via the cloud.
