Creating a website can seem like a daunting task. Whether you’re a journalist or an activist, sometimes social media just isn’t enough to represent the work you do. In this week’s blog, we share four platforms that can help you design a website for free, even if you don’t have any technical skills.
1- Wix.com
Wix offers hundreds of very easy-to-use HTML templates using the drag and drop interface on the platform, creating a website is as easy as creating a PowerPoint presentation. Wix also allows you to go back to the old stages of your site through the "Site History" feature, and includes strong integration with a wide range of third-party services such as calendars and Instagram feeds, and allows you to customize the location of smartphones separately.
Wix however does not allow you to change templates and edit designs after your site is created. It’s free version offers only 500 MB of storage and 1GB of bandwidth. Paid packages range from $ 5 to $ 25 per month depending on your options.
2. Weebly
With dozens of professional templates and advanced design elements, Weebly allows you to create websites that offer a great user experience. Weebly also provides the ability to add maps and download the entire website as a ZIP file if you want to transfer your information to a standard web hosting service.
The free version offers 500 megabytes of storage, and the downside is that you'll be forced to allow certain ads on your site. There are three paid versions that give you more options and features range from $ 8 to $ 25 per month.
3. Webflow
Webflow offers a set of tools and features that will help you build your site with ease, with an easy-to-use and responsive interface with a variety of web components to enter links and add text. It also supports a selection of drag and drop tools, which means you can add social components, maps and videos. Webflow also allows you to customize your design, whether on desktop, tablet, or smartphone.
4- Wordpress
WordPress is one of the most popular free platforms available to creators because of its open-source nature, especially for blogs, which allows for a large amount of themes and plugins that can be downloaded for free or purchased at a very reasonable price.
With 3GB of storage space and unlimited bandwidth, WordPress stands out when it comes to ready-made templates, mobile-optimized templates, and tools that allow you to include everything from comments to images. Because it’s so popular you'll often find answers to any questions you might have with the developers and users forum.
