Building confidence before a big interview is key for any and every journalist. Preparation is a major part of conducting an interview that helps secure your story. Here are some top tips to help you prepare.
1. Know your subject - Research is key for any journalists before an interview. Read up on the person you are interviewing, come prepared with your questions and make sure you know exactly what you need from the interview.
2. Dress the part - Look professional. You only get one chance to make a first impression. Dress according to the situation. If you are going to an official press conference, look the part. If you are reporting from a disaster zone, also look the part.
3. Watch your body language - Try to avoid showing your bias or reaction during an interview. If the interviewee gives you answers that you may not personally agree with, don’t give away what you are thinking. Remember, you are there to ask good questions and get your story. Your personal opinion needs to be set aside.
