Digital security advice for OSINT researchers

Protecting your identity online is integral to safely conduct an open source investigation. In the video below, Likhita Banerji from Amnesty International provides 12 useful tips for managing your digital security online during an investigation. 

1.Develop a security plan for each investigation 
2. Use a VPN to help protect your anonymity online 
3. Keep your professional and personal accounts separate
4. Create alternate social media and email accounts for OSINT research purposes
5. Use pseudonyms and don’t link your personal accounts to work accounts
6. Pick strong passwords - This is the most important step to protect your data and online accounts. 
7. Use a secure password manager 
8. Set up 2-factor authentication
9. Use an anti-malware software 
10. Regularly update your browsers and software 
11. Use messaging services that use end to end encryption - Signal and Wire are best, but WhatsApp is more widely used.
12. Delete sensitive information after you are done with it
